The Gremlin Bell Story: Protecting Motorcycle Club Members on the Open Road

Motorcycle culture is rich with legends and traditions that bring riders together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and protection. One such tradition is the Gremlin Bell, also known as the Guardian Bell or Spirit Bell. This small, seemingly insignificant accessory attached to the bottom of motorcycles carries a profound story and belief. In this blog, we explore the fascinating tale behind the Gremlin Bell and its significance for motorcycle club members.

The Legend of the Gremlin Bell:

The story of the Gremlin Bell originated many years ago in the high desert near the US-Mexico border. On a cold winter night in December, an old biker with a long grey beard was returning from a road trip to Mexico. His motorcycle was laden with Christmas gifts he intended to deliver to an orphanage near his home.

As he rode through the desert, the biker caught a glimpse of something in the distance, a flicker of movement that stirred unease within him. Unsure of what he saw, he dismissed it as a figment of his imagination. However, as he approached the location, disaster struck. Without warning, the old biker crashed, thrown from his bike and landing on the unforgiving desert floor.

Dazed and injured, the biker looked up to find a group of gremlins rejoicing in their success. Helpless and defenseless, he knew his life hung in the balance. Desperate, he reached for his saddlebag, which had broken loose in the crash. Inside were the Christmas gifts he had brought for the children.

In a last-ditch effort to ward off the menacing gremlins, the biker hurled the presents at them, hoping to scare them away. However, the gremlins persisted, moving closer with each passing moment. As he rummaged through the now nearly-empty bag, the biker discovered his final items: small bells intended as gifts for the children.

Fueled by desperation, he rang the bells as quickly as he could, creating a cacophony of sound in the hopes of driving the gremlins away. And miraculously, his plan worked.

The Arrival of Nearby Bikers:

Coincidentally, two bikers were camping nearby and heard the distant ringing of the bells. Intrigued and unaware of the old biker's plight, they set out to investigate the source of the sound. Following the bell's melodic chimes, they stumbled upon the injured biker, surrounded by retreating gremlins.

Without hesitation, the two bikers sprang into action, defending the old biker from the remaining gremlins. Their swift intervention saved his life, repelling the malevolent creatures back into the night.

Grateful for their timely assistance, the old biker sought to repay the bikers for their heroism, but they adamantly refused any form of payment. Determined to express his gratitude, the old biker cut his saddlebag tassels and fastened the very bells that had saved his life onto the two bikers' motorcycles. He explained that if ever they found themselves in need, a simple ring of the bell could serve as a call for help, potentially saving their lives.

The Significance of the Gremlin Bell:

Thus, the tradition of the Gremlin Bell was born. Motorcycle club members began attaching these bells to their bikes as a symbolic gesture of protection and solidarity. The tinkling sound of the bell is believed to drive away evil spirits and gremlins that may lurk on the road, causing mechanical issues or accidents.

The Gremlin Bell serves as a constant reminder for riders to stay vigilant and look out for one another. It represents the bonds formed within the motorcycle community and the unwavering support that club members offer each other in times of need.

The Gremlin Bell story is more than just a captivating legend; it embodies the spirit of unity, protection, and brotherhood within the motorcycle community. By attaching these small bells to their motorcycles, riders not only carry a piece of history but also embrace a tradition that offers them an extra layer of luck and safeguarding on the open road. So, fellow club members, may your Gremlin Bells ring true and keep you safe on every ride.
